TIMELY: Residents relieved they don’t have to rely on stairs any more, especially during fasting month
GEORGE TOWN: SOME 2,000 residents in one of the two blocks of 15-storey low-cost flats in Kampung Melayu near Air Itam, here, were relieved when a spanking new lift started operating on the eve of the fasting month.
The new lift is one of three to be installed in the block by the authorities at a total replacement cost of RM717,700.
The old lift had caused much inconvenience for three years to the residents with its frequent breakdowns.
Kampung Melayu Community and Security Development committee (JKKK) secretary, Sharifah Fuziah Syed Masir, heaved a sigh of relief that the ordeal of being trapped in the lift was finally over.
"There were times when kids were trapped inside the lift for hours. The breakdowns happen at least once a month," Sharifah said, adding that the lift was more than 10 years old.
Meanwhile, Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said the other two lifts at the same block would be replaced after Ramadan.
"The state government will ensure that the Public Works Department replace the other two lifts by the end of the year," Wong said after distributing aprons to 115 stall traders at the Bazaar Ramadan that was organised by the Kampung Melayu JKKK.
